Reflective Narrative: SPAN 304 Intro to Hispanic Literature, SPAN 306 Culture/Civilization of Span Latin America, SPAN 330 Hispanic Testimonials, SPAN 316 Cultures & Civilizations of Spain
Within the course SPAN 304, we spend all the time reading and analyzing short stories and poems from different literary movements. Through the reading we were able to identify different topics that sparked interesting discussions inside and outside of class. The writing assignments were part of the analysis of the readings, it helped us expand our ideas and knowledge based on the different readings. Through the reading we were able to learn more about the authors' lives and also about the historic context of each readings, to understand the message of the stories or poems a little better. One of our major assignments was a presentation that focused on a particular literary movement and we had the opportunity to learn more about the ideas that were popular in those literary movements and the most notable authors who stood out based on their literary works. For this course, I wanted to include my final essay because I had the opportunity to analyze more in depth a short story of my choice and present my conclusions after my analysis. Throughout the SPAN 306 course, I had the opportunity of learning more about the geography, politics, culture, and the history of the countries all over Latin America and Central America. We often watched videos that helped me understand more about the topics in the book and had discussions as a group to help clarify any questions Ihad. The professor often assigned written assignments based on topics discussed in class or in a film to test our critical thinking skills and language skills. This course helped me understand better more about the history of Latin America, particularly the way that all the countries slowly changed into what they are now. All the assignments, tests, group discussions, and presentations helped me learn so much interesting information about Latin America. It was an amazing experience to learn how different tribes were the first people to create their cities, temples, traditions, and many other things in different countries of Latin America. At the end of the course, we had the opportunity to do a presentation on any topic of our choice, but as long as it was related to the content we learned during class. Overall, this course helped me expand my knowledge on the very few facts I knew about Latin America and all the cultures that vary within each country. At the end of the semester, we had the opportunity to do a presentation on any topic related the class content in the Pecha Kucha format which was the only the second time using this format and it was still bit challenging to present my information in a limited amount of time. In addition to this courses, I was also able to take SPAN 330, In this course we spent time reading, analyzing and discussing, written texts and films in English and Spanish. The texts included controversial topics that we always discussed in class and also reflected on by writing our own thoughts and opinions on certain texts or films. Many of these written texts were testimonials of marginalized people that suffered due to the political issues at their countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and many others. Throughout the semester we continued to learn more about the political injustices that affected many people all over Latin America. All the texts we read in this course were a great way to learn about important events that affected and changed the lives of millions of people all over Latin America, but also we continue to learn more details about those events as time goes by. All the testimonies I read helped me realized that most of the South America and Central America countries have all done some type of brutal or political aggression towards their own people, especially those who are affected by poverty and lack of a proper education. The survivors of the countries continue to share their stories in order to inform people all over the world of the tragic events that affected them in particular, but the government did everything they could to hide it. However, now these survivors have the courage to share their experiences without feeling like their lives are in danger. I enjoyed completing our final project because we had the opportunity to interview a person from my hispanic community, who had been part of the foster system and were in the process of starting their own lives outside of the system. I decided to include this project the I truly enjoyed working one. The final course I took was SPAN 316, where I was able to learn about the culture and civilization of Spain. We began with the indigenous groups of people who migrated from other nearby countries and lived in different regions of Spain. Each group of people had their own language that spread throughout their territory. Then, we learned about the Roman invasion, the migration of the Muslims, the Arabs and ultimately the beginning of the monarchy. Throughout the chapters I was able to see how each language of the groups who once dominated Spain, all contribute to the Spanish languages that are now spoken in Spain which include: castellano, vasco, gallego, and catalan. It was very interesting to learn how Spanish slowly developed through time from Latin throughout Europe which is why there are a few European languages that are very similar to Spanish. Finally, for this course I included one of my final essays where I focused on the "Golden Age", a very important period of time in Spain where arts and literature flourished during the rise of the Spanish Empire under the Catholic Church.
