Course Description:Students examine issues, problems, and solutions to equitable schooling in a pluralistic society, while exploring schools as social institutions that transform the cultural and political dynamics of society. The course focuses on history, politics, and theories of education for culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Requires completion of approved service learning hours and community projects (30 hours).
Course Narrative:The main goal of this course was to complete at least 30 hours of service learning at a local school. By completing these hours, we are able to acquire more experience with children or teenagers, depending on our preferred grade level. This a great opportunity to explore and see how teachers have different ways of teaching and manage their students. I truly enjoyed completing my service learning hours working with a second grade class, I was able to complete reading and math activities with the students, help students who struggle with their English, organizing all the paperwork of the students, and learn about the many duties that a teacher must complete. I enjoyed reading to them and completing activities as a class, these types of activities helped me practice my teaching skills and obtain as much experience as I could. This course was part of my education minor and I'm glad I was able to take another service learning course because it gives the opportunity to go to my old elementary school and complete my service hours at the school where I made lots of memories. Also, I enjoyed being part of this service learning course because I really do enjoy spending time with children at school, I can't wait to be a teacher.
