Course Description: Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: In this course I learn how to properly translate and interpret a text or speech from one language to another. Interpretation is oral where a message needs to be transmitted in another language. Interpretation is completed immediately, the interpreter does not have time to consult or look up terms/words. Furthermore, there are two types of interpretation: simultaneous interpretation and consecutive interpretation. Simultaneous interpretation is done in the moment using special equipment such as a cabin, microphone and receptors for the audience. The interpreter will translate the speech in a fluent way to the target language, at the same time as the speaker. Consecutive interpretation remains close to the message, the interpreter takes notes from the speaker and is translated later. On the other hand, translation is a written text and contains a message that must be written in another language with the help of several resources which facilitates the interpreter's job. The translator should be aware of the structure and the preciseness of the text they are translating. Throughout the semester we practice translation and interpretation through many individual, group assignments, and class discussions. MLO 2 (linguistics) is fulfilled throughout all the written assignments and exams that we completed during the semester, we were able to learn the main difference between interpretation and translation. I hope that with the knowledge I acquired from this course I will eventually learn how to translate without relying too much on a dictionary or other source to help me with translation.
